Hard seasons have a way of making people feel isolated. NWA Hard Knocks was created to do the opposite. The podcast brings honest stories into the open and connects Northwest Arkansas listeners with the people and organizations creating hope in their own communities.

A microphone for the people doing the work

Throughout Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale, Fayetteville, and the surrounding region, people face loss, illness, addiction, financial hardship, family struggles, and obstacles that can change the direction of a life. Some of them eventually use what they learned to help someone else. They start a nonprofit, organize a support network, volunteer, advocate, raise money, or simply refuse to let another person walk through the same experience alone.

Those are the stories Dana and Amanda want to share. NWA Hard Knocks is not only about what happened to someone. It is about what they chose to do next, who they are helping today, and how the rest of the community can stand beside them.

“The people who help others should be appreciated and talked about within our community.”

Meet Dana Burns and Amanda Johnson

Dana Burns has been behind the microphone since 2017 and brings years of standup and emcee experience to every conversation. Her quick wit makes room for laughter without losing the honesty and heart at the center of a guest’s story.

Amanda Johnson is an Arkansas native and local business owner whose energy and compassion come through immediately. Her love for people, animals, and the Northwest Arkansas community gives the show its warm, welcoming spirit.

Together, Dana and Amanda create a space where guests can be candid about the hard parts while keeping the conversation focused on resilience, service, and what is possible on the other side.

The story does not end with the episode

Every conversation is intended to lead somewhere useful. When an episode features a local charity, nonprofit, organization, or advocate, this Stories section will gather the important information in one place. Listeners will be able to understand the mission, visit the organization’s website, follow its work, volunteer, donate, or share the cause with someone who needs it.

That is the real purpose of NWA Hard Knocks. A powerful story deserves more than applause. It deserves a chance to create connection and action.
